Danielle Owensby / owensbyd: Synapses Firing

Danielle Owensby Synapses Firing 2015

Psychology Today says that up to 40% of females and 30% of males will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18. Nearly half of you reading this, statistically speaking, have endured this special sort of terror. And if you haven’t, you most likely know someone that has.

And I’m sorry for that.

I’ve been creating a series of self portraits, exploring my own experience. I want to photograph others who have experienced sexual trauma in their childhoods, since there doesn’t seem to be any photography projects that explore this topic conceptually.

Wild / Sydney: Untitled Self Portrait #62

Processed with VSCO with acg preset

Something happened the other night that upset me in a bad way. I hadn’t lost my sense of peace like that in so long. I had completely turned from the person I was just a few years ago: lonely, a closet depressive and plagued with anxiety, but something set me back if only for a moment. I shook myself out of it and refused to let that take hold of me again. Since realizing the expressive power in self-portraiture as an art, I was able to channel all that anger and sadness into my camera in a way I was never able to do with my paint brushes. So I looked into the lens and I started crying. I was so angry I started crying.

Philippa King: Touching Reality

Philippa King Touching Reality 2015 +
Faintly, my reflection stares back at me. I cannot trust myself. What is real? In jamais-vu, familiar surroundings have become alien to me. Slowly navigating the world through the sense of touch can be grounding until it is ‘normal’ again. I don’t recognise this stranger. But I stretch out my hand to feel real, to touch reality.
