Kanyi Muraguri: Pacified

Kanyi Muraguri Pacified 2015

In the 1800’s the poet Paul Bilhaud grabbed a paintbrush and enveloped a canvas in black. When he got done with his “painting” he named it Combat de Nègres dans un Tunnel (Negroes Fight in a Tunnel). This crazy clown should have stuck to what he did best, which was writing poetry.

When I first saw Bilhaud’s work I burst out laughing. I found it funny and offensive at the same time. I then decided to create a series of work based on the color Black.

  1. Excellent exploration of the self and how mass media can be used intentionally/inadvertently to impose cultural context/box around oneself & others. Great composition with multiple cultural resonances. :)
